The day started out brutally cold and cloudy, but fortunately with little to no wind. Temperatures warmed a little through the day, but never approached the freezing mark, and the sun even made a very brief appearance. While the roads to the site were reasonably clear, the steep hill to the church parking lot was another story, a sheet of ice. Jim Benton, Mike Minium and Maliki Clarkston spread 150 pounds of salt, and a large quantity of gravel on the slope as orienteers started to arrive. Most of the arriving orienteers were greeted at the foot of the driveway with advice to park along the shoulder of Shaw-Goetz Road to the SE, unless they had a four-wheel drive vehicle. The advice was good – some ignored it and attempted to ascend, but only those with four-wheel drive completed the ascent to the school parking lot. Finally, about the time that starts were scheduled to close, the company hired to clear the driveway showed up, and at least by the time orienteers were finishing courses and ready to depart, they could descend safety without fear of sliding over the edge or into Twelve Mile Creek.

The orienteering itself was an adventure. Courses planned by Stephanie Ross might have been a bit shorter than normal, but the steep hills of Twelve Mile more than made up for it. Added to that was a thin layer of powdery snow over an inch or so of ice and compacted sleet. The going was slippery, and for those without studded or spiked shoes, it was a constant battle to remain upright.

An 1883 map of the area shows some interesting history. Control 77 was in the ruins of H Chalk’s barn; Control 69 was under a new stone bridge built by Jim Benton, and is near the ruins of Peter Chalk’s home. The Catholic Church and School was there in 1883, but doubtless not the present-day buildings. I suspect that some of the graves in the church cemetery must date to those days. Orienteers who parked on Shaw-Goetz Road may have noticed the old stone building on the east corner of Shaw-Goetz and California Crossroad; that is identified as Jac Spitzelberger’s Saloon.
