Event Directors: Ben Hart and Stephanie Ross

Thanks to all volunteers who helped with this event including Guy Olsen (pre-registration – in spite of having hip replacement surgery this week!!), Mike Minium (map printing), Matthew Robbins (download), Amy Lamborg (registration and instruction).

Control pickup: Bill Donnelly, Amy Lamborg, Carter Ballard, Mike Minium, Bruce Moore, Diane McKim, Brenda Blacklock, Rob Minto

Special Thanks to Lacey Kessell and the staff of Boone County Extension for letting us use their facilities for the event: a beautiful covered shelter building, modern heated restrooms, and open gates that allowed a route choice through the deer-fenced garden.  As usual, OCIN participants and volunteers did a great job of leaving things at least as nice and clean as we found them!

After a couple misty, drizzly, chilly days, we had a perfect Sunday for orienteering – mostly sunny and cool, but pleasant for running or walking through the steep woodlands of the Boone County Extension Environmental and Nature Center.

Several orienteers on brown, green, and red courses were fooled into mis-punching at their number 3 control.  Was it fair?  Here is the analysis.  Controls are supposed to be a minimum of 30 meters apart (at normal forest events), or at least 60 meters if they are on similar feature.  The controls on the map were 42 meters apart.  The #3 control was at a junction of 2 small erosion gullies, and was placed pretty low – you could not see it until you got close.  The other control was on white course at a stream/trail crossing.

So the question becomes, were they similar?  I believe that a jury at a national ranking event would uphold the placements as fair.  From #2 (also in a small erosion gully), to get to the correct control, you had to go downstream along the left side of the ditch (which became the stream), but staying well to the left of the main stream to get to erosion gullies which drained into it from that side.  The incorrect control was along the main stream, requiring a further descent along the main stream.

Several factors contributed to the mistake.  The distances between the 3 controls were all very short.  Leaving control #2, there was a large area of fallen trees which blocked the most desirable route of immediately going left of the ditch and contouring the slope to the left of the stream.  You had to either climb higher to the left, or stay to the right of the stream for a ways, then cross back over.   If you went right of the stream, as soon as you left 2, you could immediately see the incorrect control along the stream below you, and the immediate tendency was to run straight to it, forgetting that you needed to cross the stream, stay to the side of the main stream valley, and not descend quite so much.  It was an easy mistake to make, especially after having done a fast trail run to 1 and 2, ascending the hill to 2 – just enough hard exertion to be pulling blood flow to the muscles and away from the brain – a time to focus and be really careful.   Additionally, when you got to the incorrect control, the trail was mostly covered by dead leaves, so it might not have immediately registered that you were on a trail that shouldn’t be there.

Leaving the incorrect control toward 4 probably also set off some easily ignored alarm bells – you wouldn’t see the trail you expected to cross (because you’d already crossed it), and you’d spot 4 sooner and farther to the left than expected.  But again, its easy to ignore those additional warnings!   See the course images on the Livelox link above to see the relative positions of the controls.
