Light snow fell throughout the day, but
temperatures remained just barely above freezing, with the snow melting on
contact except on a few fallen logs and other elevated surfaces. Winds were calm as orienteers got to
experience a brand new map of Indian Creek, with data
from the latest lidar imagery and aerial photos. Looking at the map, I’m struck by how much it
resembles the older map made by Ukrainian mappers Shtempler
and Pantsir from little more than blank paper. When you overlay the old map, there are huge
differences in stretching and compression across larger areas of the map, but the
shapes and relationships of the smaller features pretty much all look
“right”. They did an amazing job with
the data available at the time, 20 years ago, but the new georeferenced map has
a much greater overall accuracy. We hope
that everyone enjoyed the courses and the work that went into an all-new map.
